George A. Downer, 79, longtime Needham resident, known to friends and family as "Bud," passed away peacefully on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Bud was the beloved husband of Carol A. Downer. He was the proud father of Scott, Brett (Ellen), Lisa (Gary), and Keith (Tammy), and stepfather to Randy DeForest (Ann), Jeff DeForest, and Pamela Lee. He is survived by his two sisters, Barbara and Linda. Bud was adored and loved by his 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
As a young father "Bud" served in the Air National Guard while establishing his career. He began as a welder at the Quincy Shipyard and later worked as a line manager at BTU Engineering. After a long career at BTU, Bud decided to pursue his passion as an art and antiques dealer.
A season ticket holder since 1961, Bud was a die-hard Patriots fan. His many other interests included hot rods, poker, and golf.
The family is blessed to have been able to spend Bud's last days with him. They shared many stories, laughter, tears, and love. Bud was known for his ability to form instant and enduring friendships. He forged deep bonds with each of his grandchildren, instilling invaluable life lessons. In addition to his family, he touched the lives of many people, which was reflected in the outpouring of love he received in his final days at the hospital.
