CROCKER, Roberta Haskel of Needham died at age 86, after a short illness, on May 4, 2017. A memorial service is planned for 11 am on Saturday, June 3rd, at The First Parish in Needham officiated by Rev. Catie Scudera. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Roberta was born November, 18, 1930 in Concord, N. H. and moved as a young teen to Claremont, N.H. Her family moved to Needham in 1947 where she attended Needham High School as part of the class of 1948. She briefly attended the Chamberlain School For Retailing but decided that wasn't the line of work for her. She did secretarial work until she went to the New England Conservatory of Music to study music therapy. She was a talented musician, including skills in piano, clarinet and voice. She and her husband, David Channing Crocker, also a 1948 NHS alumnus, met in Needham and married on June 5, 1955. She was remembered around town for many years as the bride from the first wedding held in the new sanctuary at the Congregational Church in Needham. They lived in married student housing at MIT while David finished his degree and it was there that their first two of three children were born. In the summer of 1958 they moved to Needham, which Roberta continued to make her home for nearly 60 years. While in Needham she was involved in a number of organizations including the League of Women Voters, the Women's Auxiliary at First Parish of Needham, Friends of the Needham Public Library, and the Needham Interfaith Council. In mid 1970's David and Robert opened Crockergraphics where she worked as a typesetter and consummate proof reader. In later years she put her music therapy interests to work by playing piano in Needham nursing homes, especially at Wingate. She enjoyed visiting the Needham Senior Center where she loved singing with the "Songsters" and sitting in on "Current Events." As an avid New England sports fan she was watching her favorite Boston Red Sox right up until the end. She is remembered by family and friends as a quiet and kind person who always was interested in hearing what others would share about their lives. She always loved a good joke or a good pun. She is survived by son William Crocker and his wife Julie of N. Andover, daughter Deborah Crocker and her husband Ronald Buta of Tuscaloosa, AL, son Arthur of Needham, brother Donald Haskel and his wife Ann of N. Attleboro, sister-in-law Janet Klitch of Old Town, ME, and granddaughters Deanna, Sarah and Katie. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Doris and Robert Haskel, husband David Channing Crocker, and granddaughter Christine Crocker. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to First Parish in Needham or the Friends of the Needham Public Library.
